Tackle complex text with a hands-on reading experience
Develop critical, analytical readers through a teacher-led, interactive, close reading experience in a small group setting! Our Close Reading Small Group Kits include the tools you need to model close reading strategies and deep thinking along with the text and hands-on resources your students need to develop a repeatable close reading routine.
Rich model texts keep students engaged during multiple reads.
Enrichment and remediation options support differentiation.
Teacher-developed materials and preselected texts reduce prep time.
How it Works
With the aid of the Focus Prompt Wheel, students read each model text 3 times. Each read helps students develop a specific skill as they dig deeper into the meaning of the text.
Model Text Easel
Teacher uses the Demonstration Easel and color-coded, dry erase markers to actively model annotations and take notes to facilitate literacy discussion during small group time.
Included in each lesson are remediation and enrichment tips. This may involve guided questions, graphic organizers, or writing extensions for after the final read.
Kits include model text specifically selected for meaningful practice in literature and poetry, or informational text.
This 36-page guide helps you along the way! Each lesson plan includes: objectives, vocabulary words, model text, blackline masters, and suggestions for how to differentiate instruction.
Model Text Easel
Turn your small group instruction into an interactive experience. The 11" x 17" easel mirrors the students' text. The dry erase surface allows you to annotate along with the group discussion.
Close Reading Poster
Hang this poster in your classroom to reinforce the concept of close reading, annotating, and color coding. It also serves as a constant reminder for students to always analyze the text they are reading.
Included are 6 Student Annotation Kits and teacher annotation markers. Each Student Annotation Kit includes color-coded annotation tools, a focus prompt wheel, and bookmark.
