Rock and Mineral Collection

Offer students an exciting hands-on learning opportunity with these various collections of unique rocks and minerals. Each collection includes number-coded specimens (measuring approximately 1 1/2" x 1 1/2") for easy identification. The Unusual Physical Properties of Minerals Collection takes a fascinating look at some of the most peculiar physical properties exhibited by minerals. Properties illustrated include double refraction, magnetism, taste, fluorescence, thermal expansion, and conductivity. Includes 15 specimens. All minerals display some degree of luster, and recognizing the different degrees and kinds of luster with the Luster Collection facilitates identification. This collection of 15 specimens provides examples of both metallic and nonmetallic luster. Cleavage is the tendency of minerals to break along preferred directions, following the internal crystal structure of the mineral. TheCleavage Collection includes 6 specimens representing the 4 types of cleavage. Some minerals leave a colored streak on unglazed tile, providing a valuable aid in identifying that mineral. Students can evaluate different streak properties with the Streak Collection, which includes a streak plate and 8 specimens. Some rocks and minerals do not demonstrate cleavage along specific planes but are consistent in how they break. The important types of fractures are represented in the Fracture Collection of 6 specimens. Explaining and demonstrating the Mohs Scale, which assigns a "hardness" to ten key minerals with talc #1 (the softest) and diamond #10 (the hardest), is made easier with the Scale of Hardness Collection of the 10 traditional minerals.
