ETA/Cuisenaire® Launches Learning Place® for Afterschool Math
New Program Meets U.S. Dept. of Education Recommendations for Standards-Based, Disguised-Learning Activities

Vernon Hills, IL—Designed to promote academic achievement, support intervention initiatives, and offer enrichment beyond the regular school day, Learning Place® for Afterschool Math provides a well-rounded and comprehensive system of hands-on activities aligned to any math curriculum.

Intended for grades 2-5, standards-based Learning Place for Afterschool Math answers the need for high-quality developmental afterschool teaching programs, as recommended by the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning, a U.S. Department of Education initiative. Opportunities abound for differentiated instruction, remediation, and enrichment experiences that motivate students to remain actively involved in math learning during afterschool hours. Hands-on activities enliven both independent and small-group practice through standards-based review that coincides with the timeframe and organization of traditional afterschool programs. According to the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning, these should be the most important goals for any afterschool program.

Learning Place for Afterschool Math supports up to 150 days of afterschool instruction. Five standards-based modules per grade level can accommodate up to 15 students working together. Each module includes a wealth of manipulative-based activities that help students connect math concepts to the real world. Clear objectives and instructions simplify program set-up and preparation, making it easy for leaders of any experience level to direct the activities and meet the needs of students with varying abilities. Strong support for English Language Learners is embedded into the program and facilitates closing the achievement gap, while cross-curricular activities help to build connections between math and other subjects. Pretests and posttests in each module provide important tools for monitoring and reporting students’ progress.

Each Learning Place for Afterschool Math module comes in a convenient storage and carrying case that makes transport easy and keeps materials organized. Modules contain teacher implementation guides complete with notes and easy-to-follow instructions; nonfiction books; engaging games; manipulatives; student activity cards; and VersaTiles®, ETA/Cuisenaire’s popular self-correcting answer case that provides activities designed for immediate feedback and skills practice.

"Afterschool hours can be quality learning hours," says Sandy Schusteff, ETA/Cuisenaire’s Vice President of Marketing. "We recognize the value of keeping children involved in the learning process and turning afterschool time into a meaningful extension of the school day. The sequenced activities in Learning Place for Afterschool Math motivate students to stay engaged after a full day of school, help them strengthen and gain confidence in their math skills, and actually have fun learning. This, in turn, prepares them to be more successful during regular school hours."
