Exclusive Literacy Series Offers Students a World of Reasons to Read
September 8, 2008 Vernon Hills, IL—Educational publisher ETA/Cuisenaire commemorates International Literacy Day on Sept. 8, by offering educators free resources from its new exclusive WorldScapes Global Issues book series. By simply visiting the company’s website, teachers can download the full text of a WorldScapes book, along with comprehensive teacher’s notes and several classroom activities to accompany the book. ETA/Cuisenaire is also offering a free WorldScapes classroom poster with any WorldScapes book order of $50 or more, from now through Sept. 30, 2008.
International Literacy Day is designated by the United Nations to point out the fact that well over 800 million adults and children throughout the world still cannot read. The WorldScapes Global Issues book series calls attention to international issues like world literacy and provides students with tools to promote empathy; build debate; and think, discuss and write about compelling world issues.
"We developed this literacy series to transport students beyond their everyday comfort zones and help them develop a social conscience," says Sean Klunder, Marketing Director for ETA/Cuisenaire. "Today, more than ever before, children are truly students of a global community and need to embrace that responsibility."
WorldScapes integrates both fiction and non-fiction text and focuses on 25 different countries or global regions. Six interrelated strands, including the new global issues, social studies, language arts, history, math and science provide real-world applications of standards-based skills and concepts, and provide a forum for developing critical thinking, discussing universal values, and integrating character education, while at the same time developing comprehension, writing, vocabulary, and fluency skills. Designed for grades 3-8, the compelling classroom texts are also available in Spanish under the Vistas del mundo titles.
